SCIENCE SAYS DATING IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR MARRIAGE

You’ve got to love the Americans – those guys get a bee in their bonnet about anything and they immediately fund a research study to test their hypothesis. Case in point, the
National Marriage Project, a comprehensive, quantitative study by the University of Virginia into, among other things, the long-term benefits of date nights.
Here at Date Night Ideas, we are firm believers in the amazing effects of regular dates with your spouse/partner, but it was great to read an actual scientific study that backed up what we already knew, i.e. that it has the potential to improve everything from happiness and commitment, to communication, parenthood stability and community integration. Hallelujah!
WHO SAYS THE STUDY IS VALID?
Fair question! These days anyone can ramble off some official-sounding statistics and call it a study. Luckily, the National Marriage Project is a very respected entity.
As a nonpartisan, non-sectarian, interdisciplinary initiative, the Project's mission is to provide research and analysis on the health of marriage in America, to analyse the social and cultural forces shaping contemporary marriage, and to identify strategies to increase marital quality and stability. In short – these guys aren’t selling anything and don’t stand to gain anything from fudging statistics or pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes.
WHAT’S THE GIST OF THEIR FINDINGS?
The short of the long is that regular date nights improve communication, increase novelty, spark feelings of romantic love, renew commitment and acts as a de-stressing tool.
There you have it – a few valid, scientifically backed reasons to make date night a priority. Next time your partner tries to wiggle their way out of your plans, have them read this and see if it can encourage them to lift their behind off the couch. And always remember – date night is much cheaper than a divorce lawyer! Invest in your relationship and reap the rewards.
